Bulletin No. 52 to all IRSE members
December 2023

Welcome to your December newsletter from the IRSE.

This will be a busy month behind the scenes as we undertake updates and improvements to our database. From 8 to 18 December it won't be possible for you to log in to the website to view 'member only' pages, book events or to buy books or logbooks. Please contact the team if you need to access anything urgently.

I was delighted to be at ASPECT in Melbourne last month. Thank you to those who attended our recent sell-out conferences, ASPECT and the 6th CBTC and Beyond conference in Toronto. Both events showcased the expertise and experience of the Institution's global membership and provided great opportunities for creating industry connections.

On my way to Melbourne I also had the privilege of meeting many of our members in Malaysia and Singapore and would like to thank them for their hospitality and enthusiasm.

In other news, nominations for Council will close at 17:00 UCT today (1 December 2023). Thanks to all of you who have taken part in this process. This is an important part of the Institution's governance and essential to ensuring we represent our global membership.

I would also like to let you know that the IRSE Global Office will be closed on Wednesday 13 December and from 22 December to 1 January, more details below.

I wish you all a happy and peaceful holiday season, and look forward to a positive and productive 2024.

35 years since Clapham

This month marks the 35th anniversary of the Clapham Junction Rail Disaster an event which continues to have significant importance to the railway industry.

Clapham highlighted the need for those working on signalling and telecommunications infrastructure to be certified as competent to carry out their safety critical tasks. The IRSE Licensing Scheme was born in response to this need. The lessons learned from Clapham are still relevant throughout the global rail industry.

On its 25th anniversary, the IRSE ran a special seminar, the papers from which are available on our website.

December office closures

The IRSE Global Office will be closed on Wednesday 13 December for a staff training day.

The annual closure for the holiday period will take place between 17:00 UTC on Thursday 21 December and 09:00 UTC on Tuesday 2 January.

Our building in London will also be closed from 17:00 UTC on Friday 15 December and will open again at 09:00 UTC on Tuesday 9 January. Please be aware that, outside of our own holiday period, staff will be working from home and some services may be limited until access to the building is restored.
